dc.description.abstract This presentation was part of the Technical Working Group on Violent Victimization Research, held December 2-3, 2014 in Washington, DC. The author seeks to understand which mechanisms account for the strong positive association between victimization and offending and which conditions make the correlation weaker or stronger. The author’s goals for understanding this overlap include preventing interpersonal violence, illuminating the scope of leading theories of victimization and offending, revealing new insights about the evolution of disputes, and reducing police officer user of force. The author reviewed cross-sectional surveys, longitudinal surveys, and data sources such as hospital admissions, mortality files, and official police data. The author discusses the limitations of mainstream criminology theoretical methods for understanding the overlap: survey items can mask incident dynamics and the focus on criminology does not account for theories on aggression from other disciplines, such as psychology and social psychology. To address these limitations, the author suggests experimental research, studying non-offender victims, non-violence, and social interactions and developing new datasets that incorporate variables from multiple disciples in the social sciences.
